PLAYER REVIEWS: Roberto Firmino lost chances while Bruno Fernandes had his worst game for United

Liverpool and Manchester United played a boring goalless draw at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Both sides had little spark on attack, with only seven shots on target in total between both sides.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had the best of the late chances, with two strong saves late from Reds goalkeeper Alisson, and the point leaves the Red Devils at the top of the Premier League with Liverpool three points behind.

SportsmailChris Wheeler assessed the performance of the players from both sides.

ALISSON 7 – United’s win was denied with two excellent late saves from Pogba and Fernandes.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD 6 – Hushed Martial, but didn’t come forward as much as he likes.

JORDAN HENDERSON 6.5 – Comfortable as an improvised mid-back, but not tested enough.

FABINHO 7 – Calming influence at the back and made an excellent blocking of Fernandes.

ANDREW ROBERTSON 6.5 – Got some nice crosses that deserved a better finish.

Jurgen Klopp’s famous three frontmen were silent, especially Senegalese forward Sadio Mane

XHERDAN SHAQIRI 6 – It did well, as it was his first competition start in over a year.

THIAGO 6.5 – Authoritative start on his home debut and came back strong in the second half.

GEORGINIO WINE ALDUM 6 – Movement caused problems at United early on, but faded a bit.

MO SALAH 5.5 – Suppressed by Shaw and couldn’t find target when he saw target.

ROBERTO FIRMINO 5 – Had Liverpool’s best chances but his finish let him down.

SADIO MANE 5 – Rarely got the upper hand from Wan-Bissaka. Very quiet by its standards.

Subs: Milner (for Wijnaldum 89), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones (for Shaqiri 76, 6.5), Minamino, Origi (for Firmino 85), R Williams, Phillips, Kelleher, N Williams.

Booked: Shaqiri, Fabinho.

Manager: Jurgen Klopp 6.5 – Will be happy with the performance from an unknown line-up.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

DAVID DE GEA 6.5 – I flew safely from Thiago and resolved everything else comfortably.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA 7 – Came on top with his duel with Mane and came forward well.

VICTOR LINDELOF 7 – Justified his selection with some nice interceptions in front of goal.

HARRY MAGUIRE 6.5 – Shaky start from him, but stood strong when it mattered.

LUKE SHAW 8 – One of his best games. Excellent in defense and a threat to the future.

Manchester United left back Luke Shaw was excellent all around, holding on to Mo Salah well

SCOTT McTOMINAY 6 – There to interrupt the game and bite the midfield. Did its job.

FRED 6.5 – Withstand the threat from Liverpool and made good progress several times.

PAUL POGBA 6.5 – Grew up in an unfamiliar role on the right, but blew United’s best chance.

BRUNO FERNANDES 4.5 – Probably his worst game for United. The game was completely over.

ANTHONY MARTIAL 5 – Passed fit to start, but had little effect. First player to be signed up.

Midfielder Paul Pogba blew United’s best chance and shot right at Reds goalkeeper Alisson

Pogba was frustrated with himself, but the result leaves United three points ahead of Liverpool

MARCUS RASHFORD 5 – Played in the middle but couldn’t stay out and took wrong options.

Subs: Bailly, Cavani (for Martial 61, 6), Mata, Greenwood (for Fernandes 89), Henderson, Telles, Matic, Van de Beek, Tuanzebe.

Booked: Rashford.

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 6 – Had a great chance of winning at Anfield and won’t take it.

Referee: Paul Tierney 6.5 – Liverpool were unhappy, he blew early for half time, but otherwise handled it well.
