PLAYER REVIEWS: Owen Farrell looked color again but Stuart Hogg played at Twickenham

England’s defense of their Six Nations crown got off to a chilling start with a defeat to Scotland – their first victory on English soil in 38 years.

An attempt in the first half by Duhan Van Der Merwe proved crucial as Gregor Townsend’s team defended heroically and improved their hosts in every aspect.

Here, Sportsmail‘s ADAM HATHAWAY and CALUM CROWE have rated each player’s performances at Twickenham …

Scotland impressed at Twickenham, taking their first win in 38 years on English soil

ENGLAND

Elliot Daly – 4

Will beat himself up after missing Duhan van der Merwe for the score in the first half of Scotland and had no chance on offense.

Anthony Watson – 4

Barely had a touch and must wonder why he spent all afternoon freezing on the wing. Never had a chance.

Anthony Watson (C) barely had a touch for England and kept the game freezing on the wing

Henry Slade – 5

Said he hoped to get more ball in the week but didn’t get much to work with. Spent his day more on the back foot than the front before being submerged.

Ollie Lawrence – 5

He did not get possession of the ball from his counterpart Cameron Redpath and it took until the 63rd minute to wear it properly. Put tackles in it, though.

Jonny May – 4

A breakthrough looked promising before halftime, but, like Watson, had no possession. Beaten late in the game and no scoring opportunities.

Owen Farrell (Captain) – 4

Got Russell’s sin away by bringing Scot’s journey to the attention of the officials, but after a quiet fall back to color. Brutally overshadowed by Russell.

England’s Captain Owen Farrell was back in color and overshadowed by Finn Russell

Ben Youngs – 5

Tidy enough, but brought out after 55 minutes with England behind the game and Dan Robson. Eddie Jones’ go-to number 9, but for how long?

Ellis Genge – 4

Missed opportunity to wager his claim in the absence of Mako Vunipola and Joe Marler and the luck of escaping no sanction for armor.

Jamie George – 6

Saved an attempt in the first half by keeping Hamish Watson on the England line and energized around the field. Some line-out disturbances.

Will Stuart – 5

Finally helped England a nudge on scrum time in a major effort in the second half, but it was a tough day on the coal. Not the only one suffering.

Maro Itoje – 6

Came in the face of Ali Price when he attacked a few scrum half kicks early on and was annoying despite some line-out misses and penalties.

Maro Itoje had caused a nuisance despite a number of line-out misses and penalties

Jonny Hill – 5

Big chance with Joe Launchbury injured and trying to take Itoje’s lead in harassing Price. Has done his share of the donkey work and earns again.

Mark Wilson – 5

Starts for the first time since March and gotten quite a fair shift until replaced at 54 minutes. Probably bad luck to get addicted so early.

Tom Curry – 5

One of the early offenders when England was on the wrong side of referee Andrew Brace and quieter than a potential Leo should be.

Billy Vunipola – 5

Yellow card after 24 minutes for a high tackle on Russell, but the ref then lost his temper with England. Still too quiet to carry.

Billy Vunipola was too quiet to carry and received a yellow card after 24 minutes for a serious tackle

Replacements used: Luke Cowan-Dickie 5, Beno Obano 5, Harry Williams 4, Courtney Lawes 5, Ben Earl 5, Dan Robson 4, George Ford 5, Max Malins 4

SCOTLAND

STUART HOGG – 9

Booming kicks and some signature devastating runs with the ball in hand. Simply beautiful from the Skipper of Scotland.

Stuart Hogg was great for Scotland delivering his signature runs and big kicks

SEAN MAITLAND – 7

No sign of rust from the Saracens. Very solid outing and fully justified his selection.

CHRIS HARRIS – 7

Mr. Reliable continues to be in midfield for Scots. Solid in defense and never let the side down.

CAMERON REDPATH – 8

Barely put a foot wrong with the debut. Won a significant turnover from Curry in the second half. The first of many hats, you suspect, for the young Bath superstar.

DUHAN VAN DER MERWE – 7

Cut in and battered by three tackles to score the game’s only try. It could be a late boost for a Lions spot in the summer.

Duhan van der Merwe completed three tackles and scored the lone try of the game at Twickenham

FINN RUSSELL – 7

A foolish trip on Youngs led to a yellow card, but still played a major role in the attack. Especially kicking out of the hand was excellent.

ALI PRICE – 6

Rattled by Itoje in the early stages and looked very nervous. But the Glasgow Warriors man did well to restrain himself afterward.

RORY SUTHERLAND – 7

He kept pushing his case for Lions selection with some vigorous work in the scrum. Undoubtedly impressed Warren Gatland looking in the stands.

GEORGE TURNER – 7

Showed a lot of aggression and fed Van der Merwe for his attempt. Can be proud of his contribution in the absence of Fraser Brown and Stuart McInally.

George Turner showed a lot of aggression and managed to feed Van der Merwe for his attempt

ZANDER FAGERSON – 7

Looked good and showed why he is now the first choice for the more experienced WP Nel.

SCOTT CUMMINGS – 7

It appeared he had entered into a formidable partnership with former Glasgow teammate Gray in the boiler room.

JONNY GRAY – 8

Brilliant in the line-out and loose. A fantastic turnover achieved in the final phase. Beat Itoje and Exeter teammate Hill.

JAMIE RITCHIE – 7

Relatively quiet afternoon from his exploits during last year’s Six Nations and Autumn campaigns.

Jamie Ritchie (right) enjoyed a quiet afternoon compared to his exploits for Scotland last year

HAMISH WATSON – 8

Just an absolute force of nature. The most dominant and influential back row on the field.

MATTE FAGERSON – 7

Positive in everything he did. Worn with real intent and purpose.

Replacements used: D Cherry (for Turner 67), O Kebble (for Sutherland 64), WP Nel (for Z Fagerson 64), R Gray (for Ritchie 66), G Graham (for M Fagerson 64), S Steele (for prize 69), H Jones (for Maitland 72)
