PLAYER REVIEWS: N’Golo Kante was excellent at the heart of Chelsea’s midfield

Hakim Ziyech’s second half goal sent Chelsea to the FA Cup final as Thomas Tuchel’s Blues beat a deviant Manchester City to end Pep Guardiola’s quadruple hopes.

The Moroccan tapped in from the penalty area after Timo Werner landed against him, which ultimately became the only goal of the match.

While Kevin De Bruyne was injured, making him hesitant for City’s Carabao Cup final on April 25.

Sportsmails Gerry Cox watched over the action on Saturday-evening and gave player ratings for each team.

MAN CITY 4-3-3

Zack Steffen – 7

The American goalkeeper kept his FA cup seat and had little chance with Ziyech’s goal, but did well shortly afterwards to save from the Moroccan after a mistake by Dias.

Joao Cancelo – 6

Joao Cancelo was busy with Ben Chilwell, who was looking for an attack from his flank, and made a dangerous cross before half time. Caught by Werner down Chelsea’s left when Ziyech scored.

Ruben Dias – 6

Undoubtedly City’s player of the season, the Portuguese center-back looked far from imperturbable and made a serious mistake that should have left Ziyech his second goal. Also missed a big chance of the equalizer when he crossed at close range.

Ruben Dias looked far from unperturbed, despite being one of City’s best players this season

Aymeric Laporte – 6

Aymeric Laporte beat Timo Werner before half time but recovered well to block the shot of the German attacker. A good tackle to keep James from having a clear attack on target. 6

Benjamin Mendy – 6

One of the seven changes, the French left back had his work off his hands to keep the raging Reece James under control. Not a great day at Wembley.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7

A huge blow to City when the Belgian limped early in the second half with an ankle injury. Made his pass halfway through the first half and began to dictate the game.

Fernandinho – 6

Lucky to escape a booking for a late tackle on Mason Mount, but booked later. Shortly before half time, a Sterling cross headed wide. Lost the fight in Kante’s midfield.

Rodrigo – 6

Stable and unspectacular to the left of City’s midfield, his deep position allowed De Bruyne to wander until the Belgian was injured. A tame shot was saved late in the game.

Raheem Sterling – 6

Bad play from the England forward struggling to find his best form. Gave the ball too many times and shot high over the bar towards the end.

Gabriel Jesus – 6

He remembered up front and worked hard to gain entry, but struggled for obvious opportunities. Curled a tame shot at Kepa in the first half and failed to make the most of half a chance late in the game.

Ferran Torres – 5

The Spanish winger had scored three goals in his previous four games for club and country, but struggled to get into the game and was replaced by Ilkay Gundongan after 65 minutes.

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7

Returning to the scene of his infamous backlash against Maurizio Sarri, in the Carabao Cup final against City two years ago. Had an easy save in the first half, and another one late in the game.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 6

Gave the ball more away than his teammates, but played his part in keeping City’s forwards at bay. Booked for pollution from Foden late in the game.

Thiago Silva – 7

Dropped down early injured but recovered to show his usual composure in the heart of Chelsea’s defense with some key blocks and tackles. Left in the closing stages after an injury to his back.

Antonio Rudiger – 7

Solid as a rock and a threat to set pieces. Injured head clash with Raheem Sterling around the hour but continued after treatment.

Reece James – 8

Super start to the game by attacking Chelsea to the right and getting into dangerous crosses. Wide shot from an angle after an angle. Booked for a tackle on Fernandinho.

Jorginho – 7

Excellent play in the center next to Kante, kept Chelsea ticking without doing anything spectacular. A solid replacement for the injured Mateo Kovacic.

N’Golo Kante – 9

Excellent in the heart of midfield, covers every blade of grass at Wembley, connecting Chelsea’s game. Back at its best since Thomas Tuchel took over. Man of the match.

Ben Chilwell – 7

Missed a great opportunity to open the score in the 19th minute when a pass from James gave him a clear view of the goal, but he put his volley horribly wide. Attacked on the bottom left, but not as effective as James on the right.

Hakim Ziyech – 8

A rare start for the Moroccan and he responded with a great showing and the all-important goal ten minutes after the pairing with Werner. A second later refused by a good save from Steffen. With 12 minutes to go.

Timo Werner – 6

Remembered as a central striker, and although struggling for goal again, he set Ziyech up for goal. One shot was blocked early and another weak attempt was saved after a 70-meter run. Replaced by Havertz for the last 12 minutes.

Mason Mount – 8

Once again Chelesa’s most creative player put Werner away from Ziyech’s goal and almost created a new one shortly after. Replaced by Christian Pulisic for the last 20 minutes.
