Moises Caicedo profile: Man United’s latest addition is a combination of Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante

If Paul Pogba leaves Manchester United next month or at the end of the season, there could be an imminent arrival at Old Trafford that will eventually step into his shoes.

Ecuadorian international Moises Caicedo is poised to complete a £ 4.5 million transfer from Independiente del Valle after the Premier League side saw competition from RB Leipzig and AC Milan.

Pogba and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante are the 19-year-old midfielder’s two heroes, and scouting reports suggest his playing style is a mix of both French stars.

Who is he?

Born in Santo Domingo in November 2001, Caicedo joined Independiente del Valle at the age of 13 and made his senior debut at the age of 17.

The midfielder was considered so important to the club that he repeatedly flew between Paraguay and Ecuador so that he could play regularly for Independiente’s first team and the youth team in the U20 Libertadores.

His impressive performance earned him his first international call-up earlier this year. It was on the international stage where European scouts were made aware of his potential.

Caicedo played in four World Cup qualifiers, scored against Uruguay and provided two assists against Bolivia. His goal made him the first player born in the 21st century to score in CONMEBOL World Cup qualification.

What kind of player is he?

The versatile youngster is comfortable operating as a holding company or a box-to-box midfielder.

He is confident on the ball and has incredible passing accuracy. In his first two games of senior football, Caicedo completed 63 of his 64 attempts at passing, ranging from easy to defensive by splitting balls.

The midfielder also reads the game well and gets himself in the right positions to make important interceptions and clearances.

When Caicedo plays further forward, he has the energy and athletic ability to force opponents to foul.

There have been clear comparisons between his two idols, Kante and Pogba, due to his similar traits.

His first professional goal was a sensational shot from distance, reminiscent of some of the attacks Pogba scored during his time at United.

Why does Manchester United want him?

The Red Devils have adopted a strategy to pursue the most valued teen talent around the world and Caicedo is a perfect fit.

The club focuses on players who they can add to their academy and progress to the first team. They’ve already added Facuno Pellistri and Willy Kambwala, who both signed up in the summer.

Amad Diallo will join them in January once he has a work permit. United reached an agreement with Atalanta in October for the 18-year-old, but he stayed with the Serie A club for the first half of the season.

United also took over 16-year-old Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid in the summer.

The MEN report that the club is keen to secure a deal for Caicedo in January so that he can move to Manchester in the new year due to work permit regulations.

RB Leipzig and AC Milan were also enthusiastic about the midfielder, but United appears to have won the race because of his signature.

What has been said?

Caicedo has made no secret that he wants to work at United, he says in an interview with ECDF in the summer when it was his dream to play for the English club.

He said: ‘My dream is to play for Manchester United, there is an example like Antonio Valencia who could get there with effort and dedication.’

Valencia was the first player from Ecuador to play for United and enjoyed a 10-year career at Old Trafford, winning nine trophies.

According to The athletic, the former United captain was asked for his opinion on the midfielder.

Valencia told the club he believed the youngster had enormous potential after watching his performances at an international level.

Independiente also seems to resign themselves to the loss of their rising star, with manager Santiago Morales admitting there was interest from Europe.

“We have received an offer from a European club for Moises Caicedo, we are negotiating the proposal,” he said earlier this month.

“It is very likely that he will not be on our team in 2021 because of the proposal we received, it is very difficult to keep him.”

Caicedo has made no secret of his intentions, saying it would be a dream to join United
